Collier Sergeant to receive valor medal of stopping shooting suspect

A sergeant with the Collier County Sheriff's Office will be awarded a medal of valor for catching a homicide suspect in Cape Coral on her day off.

Sgt. Kristin Shiner was at her home in Cape Coral on July 25 when she heard gunshots. Shiner grabbed her gun, went outside to investigate and found a man bleeding in the driveway of a nearby home, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Shiner then heard another man yell from the garage that he was going to shoot anyone on the property. She was able to get him to drop his gun, and she held him at gunpoint until Cape Coral police arrived.

Officers arrested Kenneth Bailey Roops, 52, of Cape Coral, in connection with the death of Nicholas Rainey, 30, of For t Myers. He faces a second-degree homicide charge.

On Monday, Collier County Sheriff Kevin Rambosk and Cape Coral Police Chief Jay Murphy will present Shiner with the medal of valor, the highest decoration that can be awarded to members of the Sheriff's Office.
