— A day after a North Naples man was found killed inside his condominium, Collier County detectives continue to search for suspects.

The 20-year-old son of Joseph Warren Godcharles called 911 Wednesday morning after finding his father dead inside his Key Royal condo. Godcharles was 48.

Officials said Thursday that Godcharles was last seen leaving work at an Immokalee Walgreens on Tuesday evening. He made a phone call around 9 p.m. and was found the next morning at 9:16.

Detectives have not yet released the cause or manner of Godcharles' death. Officials said they had not yet determined if the crime was random or if the 48-year-old was targeted. Sheriff's office spokeswoman Karie Partington said Wednesday that the Key Royal Villas community off Immokalee Road should remain vigilant and report suspicious activity to authorities.

An incident report obtained Thursday by the Daily News was heavily redacted. Neighbors told investigators they did not hear or see anything suspicious. Details about what detectives saw in the condo were left out.

Although the report did not say if investigators believe the homicide was related to a robbery, Godcharles' stepmother said Wednesday that she believes the killer was at his home to steal from him.

Sheriff's Office officials declined to provide audio of the 911 call placed by Godcharles' son, citing an exemption for investigative reasons. A spokeswoman said any tape that would be provided would be fully redacted after the line "911, what's your emergency?"

Barbara Peterson, president of Florida's First Amendment Foundation, said 911 audio typically must be released as a public record.

"Generally, the 911 tape is a public record subject to disclosure once it's been turned over to a law enforcement agency," she said. "However, the tape can remain exempt if law enforcement determines that the information on the tape constitutes active criminal investigative or intelligence information."
