NAPLES — Naples' Trevor Moore and teammate Erik Storck had an up-and-down day Friday in the 49er sailing in the Olympics at Weymouth, England. But overall it was a good one, considering Thursday's results.
After placing 20th (last) and 18th on Thursday and falling out of the top 10 in the standings, the U.S. team finished second, 17th and fifth, respectively, in Friday's three-race day. That moved them back into 10th in the standings.
Moore and Storck started strong in the first race of the day -- the ninth in the competition -- grabbing first place and holding onto it for the first two marks. The Finnish team slipped past them and held the lead after that, finishing 10 seconds ahead of Moore, who went to grade and middle school in Naples, and Storck.
In the second race of the day, Moore and Storck were ninth at the first mark, but continued to fall behind after that and finished 2:05 behind.
In the day's final race, the team was in fourth for the second half of the race, but Australia's Nathan Outteridge and Iain Jensen passed them at the end to edge Moore and Storck by one second for fourth.
There are no races Saturday, then a pair of races Sunday and two more to close the competition Monday. The top 10 advance to Wednesday's medal race.
After the 15 races, points from the worst race are thrown out, and the remaining points are added together. Teams get one point for a win, two points for finishing second, etc.
In the medal race, points are doubled, with the winning team getting two points, the second-place team four points, etc. The team with the lowest number of points wins the gold medal.
Races start at 7 a.m. ET Sunday, and 10 a.m. on Monday.
