The first day of school is fast approaching and next week ends Summer Day Camp at the Greater Marco Family YMCA.
The theme for the last week is "Global Getaways" and the field trip will be to Sun N Fun Lagoon on Wednesday. The last day of Summer Day Camp is Friday, Aug. 17.
Camp has produced many fond memories and the children have learned many valuable lessons. Next up for the boys and girls is ASPIRE, an after-school program that helps your child in the areas of homework assistance, recreation, arts and humanities and the value of nutritional snacks. The program meets Monday through Friday from 2:30 to 6 p.m., with the first hour spent at the Charter School. Parent pick up is at the Greater Marco Family YMCA Clubhouse.
A new component of the program is "Kids College," an online learning experience for math, literacy and science. The program also is wrapped around the YMCA Core Values of Respect, Responsibility, Honesty and Caring. The program fee is $33 a week for Marco Y Members and $43 a week for community participants. Rates include early release days. drop in days, holidays and monthly rates.
Tracy Decker, the Marco Y Youth Sports Coordinator has scheduled a Gymnastics Fun Night for today from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Little Tykes, ages 2-5, are welcome from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. and older children, ages 6-17, are invited from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. The event is in the Marco Y Gym and the fee is $10. Parents are asked to preregister their child at the Customer Service Desk and a waiver must be signed for children to take part. If your children show an interest in gymnastics, then register them for Fall Gymnastics that will be 3 to 6 p.m., depending on age group. The program will meet each Friday, from Sept. 7 to Sept. 28. Cost is $40 a month for Marco YMCA members and $45 a month for community participants.
Youth Swim lessons with Miss Dottie begin Monday. The two-week session meets Monday through Thursday.
Applications are being accepted for tutors or the Y Reads program. This is an after school reading tutorial program for kindergarten through second grades at Manatee Elementary School. Tutors will teach basic reading skills, using a structured program. Tutors also will be trained and supported by the program coordinator. The volunteer program asks for two hours per week during the school year. The program runs Monday through Thursday, 2:45 to 5:15 P.M. Stop by the Customer Service desk for an application.
