‘Indifference to the law’
Paige Kreegel has raised a lot of money in the race for U.S. House District 19. Now we have a better idea why: He completely ignored clear federal campaign laws.
Kreegel unquestionably violated federal law, as he now admits, by receiving $6,500 in illegal corporate contributions.
Under pressure from news media reports, he has sent the money back.
At worst, this represents a serious breach of the public trust and raises questions about his fitness for the office he seeks. At best, this shows indifference to the law. In either case, it raises serious concerns for voters looking for a competent and trustworthy replacement for Connie Mack.
Even more troubling is his laughable response: Kreegel claims that because the donations came in via the Internet, he was unaware they were from a corporation. First of all, I’ve never heard of a corporation making a donation of several thousand dollars to a political candidate via the Internet. Second, the idea that Kreegel had no idea he was receiving thousands of dollars from these corporations is hard to believe.
I used to work in politics and, I can assure you, receiving multiple thousand dollars in donations is something that the candidate will always want to hear about.
