Rep. Dwight Bullard is likely to continue his family’s legacy in Tallahassee after winning the state Senate primary for District 39 with 35 percent of the vote.

The Bullard family has represented South Florida in some capacity since 1992.

Bullard’s mother, Larcenia Bullard, D-Miami did not run for reelection due to term limits.

State Rep. Ron Saunders, D-Key West, gave Bullard a run for his money, winning about 31 percent of the vote. James Bush III earned about 27 percent.

Saunders, the House Democratic leader, won the fundraising race, bringing in more than $167,000. Bullard raised just shy of $50,000.

District 39, which spans four counties and more than 8,000 square miles, includes constituents from east Collier County to Miami to Key West, and presented a challenge for many trying to campaign in such a large geographical region.

Bullard will face Republican Scott Hopes in the general election.
