Election 2012: Hart likely will remain as Lee County tax collector

Tax Collector Larry Hart will likely continue in office.

Hart was leading with 22,618 votes - or 66 percent - to challenger Kyle Lee's 11,627 votes in the Tuesday primary election. Two precincts remained out.

Hart, 57, a Republican, was the assistant tax collector and was appointed to the position in April following the death of Lee County Tax Collector Cathy Curtis. Tax collector is a four-year term.

Lee, 27, also a Republican, is a small business owner.

If Hart wins, he will face James Chandler, who is running without party affiliation, in the Nov. 6 general election.

The office is responsible for collecting taxes on real and tangible property and local business taxes; it handles vehicle and boat registration and auto tags, and issues hunting licenses.
