The Southwest Florida bomb squad was called out Friday after an “abnormal device” was discovered inside a vehicle that crashed in Estero.
Jay Allen Vandall, 54, of Estero, was driving a 2004 Nissan Murano east on Corkscrew Road around 3 p.m. when he lost control, traveled off the road and hit a tree near the intersection with Burgundy Farms Road, according to a Florida Highway Patrol report.
The interior of the vehicle caught on fire and authorities discovered the device behind the driver's seat.
The bomb squad was called to the Burgundy Farms Road at about 6 p.m., Lee County Sheriff's Office spokesman Lt. Larry King said.
“The bomb squad got here, examined the suspicious device, and rendered it safe,” King said.
Authorities were investigating the device Friday night, but King said nearby residents were never in harm.
Vandall was transported to a Collier County hospital with serious injuries.
