BONITA SPRINGS — A Lee County man is accused of trying to rob a taxi driver early Tuesday in Bonita Springs.
Deputies said Ruben Hernandez called a taxi to the Sunoco gas station at Bonita Beach Road and U.S. 41 and asked to be taken to Imperial Street. After leading the driver down several back roads, Hernandez asked to stop on Orange Court Drive, then asked if the driver could break a $100 bill.
When the driver said he did not have change, Hernandez put him in a headlock and demanded all his money, officials said. The driver was able to wiggle free, at which point Hernandez ran out of the cab, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
The driver reported the attempted robbery around 4:30 a.m., and deputies later found Hernandez in the area. Hernandez, 32, of the 5400 block of Seventh Avenue, Fort Myers, faces a charge of attempted robbery without a weapon.
