The Lely Trojans pulled away from Evangelical Christian in the second half. After yellow penalty flags slowed them for most of the first half, the Trojans won their preseason Kickoff Classic, 41-12, on Friday night.

DeWarren Mobley, Williamson George and Stivens Beauplan had touchdowns called back as the Trojans mounted 85 yards in penalties in the first half. The Sentinels helped themselves by blocking a Lely field goal try just as the half ended, leaving the Sentinels down just 7-6.

But Mobley scored three touchdowns, two in the third quarter when the Trojans built a 27-6 lead.

Mobley ran the ball 15 times for 113 yards, scoring three times, having a 70-yard touchdown run called back and a 54-yard gain.

“DeWarren did a great job,” first-year Lely coach Stacey Stewart said. “He ran with a lot of grit.”

For the game Lely ended with 117 yards in penalties with a fourth touchdown called back because of a yellow flag in the waning minutes of the game.

About the penalties, Stewart said, “We had a lot of new starters and they played hard. The penalties came because they were trying to make a play. The entire team played with a lot of heart and class. I am proud of the character they showed.”

The Sentinels scored first after a successful onside kick to start the game at Lely’s 28-yard line.

On the five-play drive the Sentinels were aided by two Lely penalties. Sentinels quarterback Caleb Chapman had a big 15-yard completion to bring the ball to the Lely 1 then carried it in the for the score. Unfortunately, Chapman suffered a shoulder injury at the end of the fist half and did not return.

Lely passed just one time during the game.

As the second half wore on, Lely overpowered the Sentinels. The defense caused five fumbles, four recovered by the Trojans that led to scores.

Lely scored in the third quarter after recovering a Sentinels fumble on the visitors’ 21-yard line. Three Mobley runs added six points, and Sergio Alfaro kicked the point after for a 14-6 lead.

Lely didn’t look back.

With 5:04 left in the third quarter Lely recovered a fumble on the Sentinels 29-yard line. Beauplan ran for 13 yards, and Karbiel Dirogene ran 16 yards for the touchdown. With the point-after good, Lely led 21-6 with 4:38 left in the third.

The rout was briefly interrupted when the Sentinels’ Cortavious Kelty ran the ensuing kickoff back 99 yards for a score.

Lely scored again at the 1:18 mark after Evangelical fumbled for the fourth straight possession. Lely took over on the Sentinels 3-yard line, and Mobley waltzed in for the score, making it 28-6.

Sophomore quarterback Zach Gober scored on a 7-yard run and Marvin Liberiste made good on a 4-yard touchdown run to bring the score to 41-12.
