A homeless man was arrested early Wednesday after Collier County sheriff’s detectives received DNA evidence linking him to an April bank robbery.
Deputies detained Christopher David Cabrera, 28, in North Naples around 1:45 a.m. Cabrera, who reports say is homeless, faces charges of armed robbery, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, grand theft and committing a third-degree felony while wearing a mask.
Cabrera is accused in an April 12 robbery at a Wells Fargo bank at 7255 Radio Road. In the robbery, a masked man went inside the bank around 3:30 p.m. and demanded money from employees at gunpoint.
During the robbery, the man slammed the gun on the counter, causing the gun to break. Detectives later learned it was plastic.
After the robbery, investigators found a trash bin at a nearby apartment complex with pants, shoes a T-shirt and a jacket marked with red ink as if from a dye pack. Witnesses also reported seeing a suspicious person near the trash bin shortly after the robbery, a report said.
The clothing was tested by a Florida Department of Law Enforcement laboratory, which extracted DNA from the outfit. When cross-checked with a federal database, the DNA was matched to Cabrera, according to investigators.
