A Golden Gate man received a 10-year prison sentence this week for having sex with a 13-year-old girl who was half his age in December 2010 and January 2011.
David Huffman, 30, pleaded no contest Tuesday to one count of sexual battery of a victim between the ages of 12 and 16. Investigators said Huffman twice had sex with the victim, who was a Golden Gate High School student at the time of Huffman's arrest. Neither force nor coercion was alleged.
Investigators were tipped off to the relationship when a Collier County Sheriff's Office youth relations deputy found out Huffman told a student to stay away from the victim, calling her "his girl," an arrest report said. After a brief consensual relationship, the victim became interested in a boy her own age, at which point Huffman hacked into the victim's Facebook account and told the boy to back off, the report said.
Huffman accepted the plea agreement in exchange for prosecutors dropping two sexual battery charges. He also received five years of probation and is now a registered sex offender.
