The Collier County School Board on Tuesday approved an academic calendar for the 2013-14 school year with a Aug. 19 start date and June 4 last day of school.
A committee including teachers, administrators and community members worked on the calendar. It includes a built-in hurricane day and puts finals and the conclusion of the first semester before winter break.
Debbie Terry, the district's executive director of human resources and chair of the calendar committee, said the group put academics first then "fit all the pieces in."
Other dates on the calendar are:
Winter break — Dec. 20 - Jan. 3
Spring break — March 24-28
Graduation — May 30
