Lee County commissioners discuss plan to find new county manager

At the last Lee County Commission meeting of the year, the board worked on developing a timeline for hiring a new county manager.

When Karen Hawes was asked to resign from the position in October after she shutdown Medstar, the former county-operated air ambulance program for wrongful billing and inadequate safety certificates, Doug Meurer was named the interim county manager.

The board unanimously agreed on Tuesday to develop an ordinance with the specified requirements and to give human resources the direction to hire a recruiter. They will bring at least three, but no more than five, possible headhunters from which the board will select.

Meurer, who said he doesn't want to make the position permanent, will not be part of candidates for the position. Meurer, who was the assistant county manager, may return to that position but will not know until the new county manager is hired.

The process will begin in January.
