"Passionate, is the one word that comes to mind when I think of what Marco Island citizens think about their Big Flag," said Dave Rice, chairman of the Big Flag Committee. I assure everyone, on behalf of the committee that, 'Our Flag Will Fly Again' as fast as possible."

Damage resulting from an automobile accident was addressed through city committee procedures at a meeting Nov. 21.

Following directives from the committee at the meeting, Timothy Pinter, Public Works director, responded immediately and reports that a new and improved flag pole was ordered through the purchasing department on Nov. 28. The pole manufacturer's delivery date has not yet been received. Eli Contracting Company, the installer of the original flag has been contracted for removal and replacement and Condee Cooling and Electric Company has been contracted to repair and replace the uplighting fixture.

The driver's insurance company, All-State, was contacted immediately following the accident and a claim has been filed. While awaiting the claim's result, the original donor of the pole, Michael and Jill Havey, generously provided all funds to expedite the project and upon receipt of the insurance claim will be reimbursed.

"The Big Flag has become a symbol of the patriotic passion of our residents, added Rice, and it is difficult to have patience while waiting for the flag to fly." It was suggested flying a smaller flag in the meantime, but, this was rejected by the manufacturer on the basis of additional liability issues.

"I assure everyone, that the city has expedited the process in a timely manner and upon receipt of the new pole, it will be installed immediately."

The committee, discussed the original goal of maintaining a fund of no less than $20,000to cover any contingencey costs in the future.

Fundraising chairman Leo Sutera has an on going campaign and is accepting donations daily. Contact Leo to make a contribution at email address, LSBSmarco@aol.com or call (781) 829-8899.

Maybe you found a new spot compare to the American automobile driver skills? Maybe in the center of Veterans Park? I see the next accident is coming up on this high traffic spot with all the confusing police controls and empty police cars.
By all the old women we have on Marco Island and the drunken early birds that present spot is for the flag unsafe. AND WE WILL NOT DISHONOR THE FLAG BY HITTING OVER AND OVER AGAIN!

QUESTION.. Why has the insurance claim NOT been paid yet?

Nothing against the flag, but it's in a bad place.
The road slightly curves as one drives down the new Jolley Bridge and the flagpole is straight ahead if you fail to negotiate the slight curve.
It's only a matter of time until a truck or car wipes out the flag and welcome sign again.
Next time there may be a fatality.
Well intentioned but poorly planned.
With all the drunks, bad drivers, people driving under the influence of Ambien, etc... it will be smashed before long.

What luck that woman put a tiny dent in the flag pole!

Affords these old geezers, starving for purpose, two full years worth of weekly conclaves, aimed to hatch this mouse of a flag just marginally larger than the banner somehow erected just across the street, with so much less solemn deliberation, by our Yacht Club.

Maybe the Yard Club make a deal with Perkins. A win-win situation. The Yard Club makes money what they never did and on top Marco Island get a real biggy. Not this Mickey mouse size of a flag needs an organization, chairman, donation, wrong spot and all other crap.
