The Tift County (Ga.) Blue Devils got off to a torrid start, but couldn't hold off Long Beach (Ca.) Poly, falling 62-55 in the first game of the City of Palms Classic.
The Blue Devils led 16-14 at the end of the first quarter, but a sloppy second quarter carried over for rest of the game. The Blue Devils were outscored 16-8 in the second quarter and 17-11 in the third, but a 20-15 rally in the final quarter was not enough to win.
Tift’s Brannen Greene, who is ranked No. 25 among prospects on Rivals.com, led all scorers with 21 points and recorded two blocks and seven rebounds in the loss. He got help from teammate Tadric Jackson, who finished with 20 points and five steals. However, only three other Blue Devils contributed to the scoresheet, all finishing with seven points or less.
The Long Beach (Ca.) Poly Jackrabbits, ranked No. 40 in the nation by ESPN, took advantage of 20 Tift County turnovers, and got big games from their top players. Jordan Bell, who has committed to Oregon, led the Jackrabbits with 19 points, nine rebounds and six blocks. Roschon Prince, a USC commit, scored 17 points, and Brandon Staton finished with 12 points and four steals.
