Huntington (W.Va.) Prep behind the No. 1 rated player in the country according to ESPN trounced Houston-HCYA, 77-50, in the Signature Series of the City of Palms Classic.
Senior small forward Andrew Wiggins, who is the consensus No. 1 recruit in the nation, led Huntington Prep in scoring with 31. The 6-foot-eight-inch Wiggins, who is being recruited by Florida State, Kansas, Kentucky and North Carolina, scored 14 of his 31 points in the third quarter.
“When my teammates are playing good, I’m playing good,” Wiggins said. “Our team is solid.”
Huntington Prep shot 54 percent from the field. Wiggins shot 15-for-22, and the team’s second leading scorer, senior center Moses Kingsley, shot 6-for-9 for 12 points.
HCYA junior forward Justin Jackson, who is ESPN’s No. 16 ranked prospect in the Class of 2014, was the leading scorer for HCYA with 19.
HCYA senior guard T.J. Rhodes, who is the son of HCYA head coach and former Major League Baseball player Karl “Tuffy” Rhodes, was second in scoring for the Warriors with 17.
Huntington Prep will face Jacksonville-Arlington Country Day in the Signature Series Final on Saturday at 7:15 p.m.
