Montverde Academy (Fla.) removes Chicago-Whitney Young from the picture in a 68-63 overtime thriller in the quarterfinal of the City of Palms Classic on Thursday.
Montverde senior power forward Devin Williams gave the Eagles the lead at the free-throw line after a battle of lead changes in overtime.
“We had to fight it out at the end,” said Jalyn Patterson, who solidified Montverde’s win by scoring the final 4 points. “We were competing all game against a tough team and we just had to play hard, come out and win.”
The No. 1 ranked team in the nation according to ESPN, Montverde, led Whitney Young, which is ESPN’s No. 9 ranked team, by three points with 8 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter.
Montverde’s junior guard D’Angelo Russell fouled Whitney Young’s junior guard Miles Reynolds behind the 3-point line while he was attempting a shot. Reynolds nailed all three of his shots to force the game into overtime.
“To be the No. 1 ranked team at this point, we need to continue to win and play through the tournament,” Montverde head coach Kevin Boyle said. “To solidify it, we need to win the tournament.
The 6-foot-2 Reynolds led all scorers with 18. Reynolds fouled out in overtime along with teammate Paul White, who is ESPN’s No. 55 ranked prospect in the Class of 2014.
“Any time you take away key components of what you do normally is difficult,” Whitney Young head coach Tyrone Slaughter said. “If those guys are in the game down the stretch, we would have been able to do some things a little bit differently than we were able to do.”
The Dolphins’ 6-foot-10-inch big man Jahlil Okafor was down to his last foul in overtime. Okafor, who is Rivals’ No. 1 ranked prospect in the Class of 2014, scored 16 points, and he came away with 13 rebounds.
Montverde’s Russell, who is ESPN’s No. 13 ranked prospect, and Williams led Montverde in scoring with 17 apiece.
Montverde junior center Dakari Johnson, who is ESPN’s No. 12 ranked prospect, had a big game under the net for the Eagles. The 6-foot-8-inch Johnson had 17 rebounds and 4 blocks.
Montverde will challenge Long Beach (Calif.) Poly, which is ESPN’s No. 6 ranked team, in the City of Palms Classic semifinal on Friday at 9:30 p.m.
