Ernie Banks would have been proud of Whitney Young. The Chicago team played two Friday, winning one and losing one — both by a three-point margin.
Whitney Young edged Omaha (Neb.) Central, 60-57, on Friday evening in the consolation semifinal round of City of Palms Classic. Whitney Young earlier suffered its first loss of the season in overtime to No. 1 ranked Montverde Academy, 66-63, in game that finished around 1 a.m.
Whitney Young’s Jahil Okafor, who is ranked No. 1 by Rivals, led all scorers in the nightcap with 23 points. The 6-foot-10 center — who is a distant cousin of Washington Wizards’ Emeka Okafor — scored 16 in the loss to Montverde.
“It was an ugly game for the whole team but we got the win,” Okafor, who is being pursued by most every top college basketball program including North Carolina, Michigan State and Ohio State, said of the victory over Omaha Central.
Senior Nick Billingsley, who has committed to play at University of Nebraska-Omaha next season, led Omaha Central scorers with 15 points. Louisville-commit Akoy Agau, a 6-foot-10 center, added 13 points.
