Lone Peak senior teammates Eric Mika and Nick Emery dominated the skill competitions in the City of Palms Classic.
The 6-foot-10-inch center Mika earned his Edison National Bank Slam Dunk Championship shortly after
Mika matched up against Eagle’s Landing senior shooting forward Isaiah Dennis in the finals of the dunk competition. Mika won the competition with a tomahawk dunk, which came from a pass behind the backboard.
“It (winning the skill competitions) says we are well-rounded,” Emery said. “We have a lot of guys, who can do a lot of good things.”
Emery, a senior guard who is headed to Brigham Young University next year, defeated Lake Highland (Fla.) Prep’s Jay Henderson in Thursday’s Hahn Loeser City of Palms 3-point Shootout. Emery scored 19 points in the final round to edge out Henderson, who only scored 13.
Emery was awarded the City of Palms 3-point Shootout award by college basketball commentator Dick Vitale.
“It (Mika and Emery winning the skills completion) was great,” Emery said. “What are the chances of that?”
Mika stumbled across some trouble in the dunk contest semifinal when his teammate T.J. Haws could not properly kick the ball to him.
“He (Haws) told me that he was going to be able to do a rainbow – kick it over his head and let it bounce so I could dunk it,” Mika said. “I think I put too much faith in him.”
Lone Peak is competing against Montverde Academy (Fla.) in the City of Palm Classic championship game on Saturday at 9 p.m.
