One 19-year-old was killed and another seriously injured Christmas Day when their pickup struck trees along State Road 29 in Collier County.

The driver of the 2003 Dodge Ram pickup, Edgar Retana, 19, of Lehigh Acres, was pronounced dead at the scene of the single-vehicle crash that occurred about 4:30 a.m. Tuesday on State Road 29, north of Oil Well Road, the Florida Highway Patrol reports.

A passenger in the truck, Ivan Zapata-Cruz, 19, of Immokalee, was taken to NCH hospital in Naples with serious injuries, the FHP reports.

FHP provided this account of the crash:

The truck was traveling south on State Road 29 in the southbound lane. For unknown reasons, the driver failed to maintain control of pickup and drifted in a southeasterly direction across the northbound lane and entered the grassy east shoulder. The driver then overcorrected by steering the truck in a southwesterly direction across both lanes of State Road 29 while the truck rotated clockwise.

The pickup entered the west shoulder where its left front struck and knocked down a tree. As a result, the truck overturned while continuing to travel in southwesterly direction. As the truck was overturning, its right side subsequently struck a second tree. The pickup came to rest on its right side against the second tree, facing northwest on the west shoulder.
