Prep boys basketball: Immokalee comes up just short in East Lee County title game

LEHIGH ACRES — After missing tying or lead-taking shots in the fourth quarter, Immokalee settled for the runner-up trophy in the Holiday Madness Premier Basketball Tournament on Saturday. Host East Lee County won 62-60 to claim the crown at the end of the four-day, 32-game tournament.

"We played hard and battled back," Immokalee coach Brien Crowder said.

Junior Jolibois hit a three-point shot with 2.9 seconds left, making it a two-point game. After an East turnover on the inbound, the front-court official called a foul on Immokalee, but he was overruled by the baseline official, who said that Crowder had called time out before the foul.

Tshumbi Johnson had the chance to hit the tying shot at the buzzer. Taking a bounce pass, he took a jump shot, but the ball hit the front of the rim.

The Indians (9-6) got off to a slow start, returning to earth after Friday's thrilling 18-point semifinal win over Saint Xavier (Ky.).

"We were a little flat after last night," Crowder said. "It was an amazing victory. We played so well. Last night was about the best that we've ever played in the last four years. We beat a team that had just come off a 28-point victory."

Johnson led the Indians with 18 points, including two three-pointers. Xavier Richardson hit four baskets in the fourth quarter to end up with 12 points. Jolibois had 11 points, with nine coming on three-pointers.

The Jaguars (11-4) ran a tight zone defense all night. With Immokalee's slow first half, East led by as much as nine points.

"We weren't getting any movement early and we got moving a little bit later and started rebounding," Crowder said.
