The Greater Marco Family YMCA is known for, among other things, as the place to go for swim classes. On Saturday, instructor Rebecca Gill will begins American Red Cross Saturday Swim lessons, through March 31.

Class levels, begin with Parent/Child Aquatics for ages 6 months through 4 years. The parent takes an active role in the lesson program for their child and assists in the orientation to the water of the child. Class times are 12:45 to 1:15 p.m. She also has three Learn to Swim classes for children ages 6 to 12.

Level 1 for beginners is from 12 to 12:30 p.m. Participants learn how to float on their front and back with assistance, move arms and legs for propulsion, put faces in the water and basic water safety. Level 2 for more advanced is 11:15 to 11:45 a.m. and Level 3 for even more advanced is 10:30 to 11 a.m. These levels learn even more water safety and start swimming independently of the instructor.

The fee for each class is $50 for Marco Y members and $70 for community participants. Marco Island residents may receive a $15 discount for youth swim lessons through funds provided by the City of Marco Island. Class times are subject to change, depending on program participation.

Gill is also available for private swim lessons, which are arranged with the client’s schedule. Rates for Marco Y members are $30 for half-hour lessons and a package of six lessons is $160. Community participant rates are $40 per half-hour and $220 for a six-lesson package.

Swim lessons with Miss Dottie Weiner will begin on March 19. It is a two-week program that meets Monday through Thursday. Additional dates are April 9 to April 19, April 30 to May 10 and May 21 to June 1. The classes are grouped in classic YMCA swim names like Parent/Child 5:30 to 6 p.m., Pike /Eel 3:30 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 6:30 p.m., Ray/Starfish 4 to 4:45 p.m., Guppy/ Minnow 4:45 to 5:30 p.m. and Fish/Flying Fish and Shark from 4:45 to 5:30 p.m.

The Parent/Child class ages are also 6 months to 3 years. Students move through the levels as their swim proficiency increases. The rates are the same as the Saturday Learn to Swim Classes and Miss Dottie is also available for private swim lessons.

Students are encouraged to join the Greater Marco Family YMCA Swim Team. Join Coach Kamal Farhat and represent the Y at swim meets across the state. The swim team is the perfect opportunity for your child to make new friends, challenge themselves, improve swimming skills, and stay in shape all year round. Swim team beginners meet from 3 to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday and Advanced swimmers practice from 4 to 6 p.m. The fee per month is $60, with a sibling discount to $55. Community participants pay $107 a month. The seasonal weekly drop-in rate for children vacationers who qualify is $23 a week.

Those over the age of 18, and are proficient swimmers, are invited to join the Master Swim/AM Aquatics program. The Aquatic Center opens at 7 a.m. Monday through Friday. This program is great for all levels. Coached practices with Farhat are every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 7 to 8 a.m. Fees for Marco Y members is $70 monthly. Community participants will pay $95 a month and weekly drop-in fee is $26 a week.

The 25-yard Y Pool has six lanes and an attached shallow pool for various Aqua Aerobic and Aqua Zumba Classes. The pool temperature is kept at 84 degrees.
