In Lely softball, the Lady Trojans open their home season with Bishop Verot at 7 p.m. on Thursday.
Coach Jess Millar is in her third season, with her team going 10-12 last year. Key losses to the team were Andrea Tanguma, third base and Sadie Fox, shortstop. Key returners are pitchers Lisa Feola and Gabi Pozo, both seniors, catcher Katie Hogan, a senior and junior Susana Martinez, centerfield.
Coach Millar said that with the loss of seven seniors Lely will be a very young team this year. With virtually an entirely new infield there will be growing pains.
The Trojans are happy to have a healthy battery this season after playing most of 2011 without pitcher Gabi Pozo. With the addition of a talented freshman in Navia Penrod the Trojans hope their seniors will be able to lead this young team to a competitive season in their new district, Class 5A-District 14.
