For the first time since 2006, crime rose slightly in Naples last year, according to data released Wednesday by the city's police department.
The 2.3 percent increase was due, in part, to a leap in aggravate assault cases. That number more than tripled from 14 in 2010 to 46 in 2011,
"The majority are directly contributed to domestic violence cases," the Naples Police Department said in a written statement.
Auto thefts also increased from nine in 2010 to 16 in 2011.
The annual Uniform Crime Report to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement lists "Part I crimes," which include major offenses like homicide, sex offenses, and arson.
Robberies, larcenies and burglaries all dipped in 2011. Overall, however, the year ended with 670 reported part I crimes.
"Although the UCR report shows a slight increase for 2011, it is important to note that the overall crime rate is still the second lowest that it has been since 1998," Chief Tom Weschler said.
The lowest number of reported crimes in the same period was in 2010, with 655. The highest was in 1998, with 1,248.
