Control burns are to blame for the smoke that is filling the air in Collier and Lee counties.
A few controlled burns in eastern Collier and Lee counties combined with winds from the east/northeast at 15 mph is causing the hazy and smelly conditions. The Florida Highway Patrol is reporting two controlled burns in Immokalee. There is also a pile burn in the Picayune Strand.
There are also three controlled burns in Lee County: a 62-acre burn by the Lee County Parks and Recreation Department in Hickey Creek, a 240-acre burn in Bonita Springs by the Southwest Florida Water Management District and a burn that could get up to 60 acres in Lehigh Acres by the Florida Forest Service.
Collier County arrests: 05-26-2012
