Nacho Mama's, Joey's Pizza lead tight softball races

Having reached the midpoint of the 2012 season, both divisions remain very close in the Marco Men’s Senior Softball League.

In the Island Division, Nacho Mama’s lead was cut to one game when second-place Sand Bar shut out Nacho Mama’s on sterling pitching and offensive performance by Manager Jim George.

Islander Restaurant, also tied for second place, kept pace with a come-from-behind win in the ninth inning against the Brewery.

Joeys’ lead in the Marco Division increased to two games, as a result of beating second-place ADKOS.

Islander Restaurant, 10, Brewery, 6

A five-run fourth inning by the Islander’s opened up a 7-1 lead as they cruised to the win. Although the Brewery out hit the Islanders the bunching up of hits in the fourth inning was the difference. Brewery’s Dave Banghart, Craig Cunningham, Tom Angelo, Jack Mateja, all had two hits, while Ed Kingsbury and Ron Hobson banged out two each for the Islander Restaurant. Angelo had four RBIs for the Brewery.

Sand Bar, 12, Casa Mia, 9,

Sand Bar’s Jimmy Cuevas and Tom McCullough ripped four hits each and John Sherwin had three hits, including a two-run homer in the win. Ron Peterson and Scott Byers drove home three runs apiece for Sand Bar. Losing pitcher Jack O’Brien laced four hits, one a triple for Casa Mia, with Tom Porter, Bill DeNino, and Ray Niemeyer having three hits each. Rich Small and Ray Kane blasted homers, with Kane having three RBIs.

Nacho Mama’s, 13, DaVinci’s, 5

DaVinci’s opened up an early 3-2 lead over first-place Nacho Mama’s only to have a six-run fourth inning put the game out of reach. Nacho’s made the best out of eight walks, along with timely hitting for the win. Rich Schiller had three hits, including two doubles, to pace Nacho’s. Doug Smith was four-for-four and Mike Puskar racked up three hits for DaVinci’s.

Sand Bar, 4, Nacho Mama’s, 0

It was all Jim George as second-place Sand Bar knocked off first-place Nacho Mama’s. George not only shutout Nacho’s, limiting them to six hits, no Nacho player reached third base. George was supported by three double plays. George provided the scoring as well, driving in three runs on a double and solo home run.

Islander Restaurant, 12, Brewery, 11

Ed Kingsbury’s hit in the bottom of the ninth drove in the tying and winning runs for the Islander. Kingsbury ripped five hits, good for four RBIs. Mike Hopkins lined three hits, driving in two runs for Islander. Craig Cunningham banged out five hits for the Brewery. Teammates Dave Coward had four, with Jack Mateja, Jerry Cnudde, and Paul Shelton stroking three hits each.

DaVinci’s, 9, Casa Mia’s, 7

DaVinci’s scored three runs in the seventh inning to break a 6-6 tie for the win. Doug Smith had three hits, while Jerry Engel and John DeRosa each drove in two runs. Jack O’Brien laced three hits, chasing three runs home for Casa Mia and Bill Griffin drove home two runs.


ADKOS, 9, Crazy Flamingo, 5

ADKOS survived a bases-loaded situation in the bottom of the seventh inning. Mike Galatis provided the fire power in the game, driving in three runs on two hits. Paul Vorwick and Don Rooksberry thumped triples for ADKOS. Pitcher Fuzz Fazekas limited Flamingo to seven hits.

Mutual of Omaha Bank, 15, Rookies, 12

Sonny Emerling and John Dugan had three RBIs each, on three hits from Emerling and two from Dugan for the Bank. Dugan also made a number of critical defensive plays, stopping Rookies’ rallies. Jack Evans and Nick Brooks stroked three hits, with Dick Corley hammering a three-run home run for Rookies.

Joey’s Pizza, 13, CJ’s on the Bay, 0

Joeys pounded CJ’s, using the long ball for the win. Al Cenicola, Chuck Reich and Jim White launched home runs, with Jim Dorey and White smacking triples. Reich and White drove home three runs each. Reich only allowed CJ’s nine hits in pitching the shutout.

Joey’s Pizza, 12, Rookies, 6

Bill Kayhart whacked a three-run home run and Joe Kruse added another three runs on three hits, one a blistering triple to left field for Joey’s. Winning pitcher Roger Wise contributed to the win with two RBIs. Jack Evans stroked three hits and Nick Brooks chased three runs home for Rookies.

Mutual of Omaha Bank, 11,

Crazy Flamingo, 6

The Bank evened its record at 5-5 behind the bats of Jack Stevenson and Ed Brack. Both had three hits and two RBIs, with Brack smashing a home run. John Luegering drove in three runs on two hits for Flamingo.

CJ’s on the Bay, 23, ADKOS, 7

Dan Standard and Dan Callahan drove in four runs each, with Standard crushing a home run and Callahan a triple. Ray Zielinski and Warren Uhl had three hits each as CJ’s bats erupted for 24 hits. Barry Bates had three RBIs on two hits for ADKOS.

Joey’s Pizza, 11, ADKOS, 4

It was over after the first inning when Joey’s scored five runs to take a two-game lead in the Marco Division. Jim White and Tom Whitlock were major contributors to the win, driving in three runs on two hits. Don Rooksberry of ADKOS lined three hits, good for a RBI, while Paul Burnett cracked a double and a triple for a RBI.

Mutual of Omaha Bank, 18,

Crazy Flamingo, 17

Scoring three runs in the bottom of eighth inning, the Bank won in extra innings. Between the two teams there were 40 hits. The game was tied at 16-16 at the end of seven innings. Roger Fleming had three hits for the Bank. Jack Stevenson drove home four runs on two hits, with Ed Brack collecting three RBIs with a three-run home run in the win. Crazy Flamingo’s John Luegering hammered four hits, with Chuck Wilson and John Ranieri having three each. One of Wilson’s was a grand slam home run. A single, double and a triple by Ranieri gave him five RBIs.

Rookies, 17, CJ’s on the Bay, 6

Seven runs were scored by Rookies in the first inning with the key blow being a grand slam home run by winning pitcher Butch Monson, who limited CJ’s to seven hits. Chipping in for Rookies were Mike Walsh and Dick Corley with three hits each and Nick Brooks with tree RBIs. Brooks and Ed Kopecky cracked triples.


Nacho Mama’s, 8-3, Islander Restaurant and Sand Bar, 7-4, Brewery and DaVinci’s, 4-7 and Casa Mia, 3-8.


Joey’s Pizza, 9-2, ADKOS, 7-4, Mutual of Omaha Bank, 6-5 Crazy Flamingo and CJ’s on the Bay, 4-7, Rookies, 3-8.
