Pedestrian killed crossing U.S. 41 in south Lee

A 62-year-old man was killed Friday afternoon attempting to cross U.S. 41 in south Lee County. He is the fifth pedestrian killed on Southwest Florida roads in about a week.

Just before 1 p.m., Edward C. Eberspacher of Shelbyville, Ill., was crossing U.S. 41 near the intersection with Jamaica Bay Boulevard, which is north of Alico Road, according to a Florida Highway Patrol report. At the same time, a 2006 Subaru sport utility vehicle was heading south in the inside lane of U.S. 41.

As the Subaru passed through the intersection, Eberspacher began to cross, stepping in front of the SUV, reports said.

Eberspacher was pronounced dead at the scene. John H. Harker, 66, the driver of the Subaru, and his passenger, Dorothy L. Harker, 65, were not injured.
