The Greater Marco Family YMCA is excited about two special events with Nick Lemke, our Karate Dojo instructor.

A Self Defense Workshop for Women will be on Saturday, Feb. 18. The one-day workshop will cover women’s increased awareness to their surroundings, self-defense techniques and how to use their voice as a weapon. The course will also cover the correct way to block, punch, kick and defend against a grab, or attack.

The course will be taught by Seibukan Shorin Ryu second-degree Black Belt Michelle Murley, assisted by Lemke. A as special feature, women are also encouraged to bring their children to the workshop and have them learn the same self-defense techniques.

The workshop is open to women and children, ages 8 to 18. Children attending must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. The session will be 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., with a one-hour break from 12 to 1 p.m. The workshop is also scheduled for March 17 and April 4. The fees for each workshop are $60 for individual women and $80 for a woman with child.

Class size is a 20-participant minimum. For more information contact me, Steve Reynolds, at marketing@marcoislandymca.org

The second event is a Karate School Fundraiser, “All You Can Eat Blue Crab Dinner,” on March 3 at the Y Airnasium. The fundraiser will help offset charter costs for the Y Dojo and raise funds for Karate participants to attend tournaments and seminars. The tasty menu includes blue crabs, sweet or unsweetened tea, southern style sides, dessert, music, a karate demonstration and a session on how to catch and clean blue crabs. The fundraiser runs 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. The charge is $50 for adults and $13 for children under 13. Registration deadline is March 1 at 9 p.m.

Swim lessons with Miss Dottie begin on March 19, but first will be the start of the season on March 10 with the 17th Annual Dottie’s Duck Derby at the Y. Ducks will be on sale soon. The duck races begin at 11 a.m.

Sign up today for Little Tykes Flag Football, beginning Thursday for six weeks. This program is open to children ages 4-6 and is held on Thursdays from 5:15 to 6 p.m. Cost for Marco Y members is $30 and $40 for community members. Volunteer coaches and team sponsors are welcome. Call me at 239-394-9622, ext. 228, if you’re interested in coaching or sponsoring a team.

The Group Exercise schedule has expanded to include: Zumba Toning with Liz at 6 a.m. on Thursdays, Pilates with Joan on Mondays, Wednesdays and now Fridays at 8:15 a.m. and Aqua Fit with Tracy on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.
