Sheriff: Off-duty officer shoots, kills man in Florida

JACKSONVILLE — Authorities say a Jacksonville man who brandished a gun is dead after being shot by an off-duty police officer.

The shooting happened early Sunday outside Club Aqua in Jacksonville.

The Florida Times-Union reports several hundred people had gathered in the club's parking lot after closing at 2 a.m. That's when off-duty officer Michael D. Peterson and another officer overhead comments that a man who had been removed from the club was going to get a gun.

Sheriff's Office Chief Tom Hackney says Peterson confronted Nicholas Samuel Underwood as he walked toward the front of the club and told him to stop. He then fired his weapon five times, striking Underwood in the chest and killing him.

It was the fourth police shooting in Jacksonville so far this year.
