TALLAHASSEE — The Florida Senate wants the Obama administration to fast-track visas for Haitians waiting to join relatives in the U.S.
The Senate approved Monday a resolution (SM 1528) urging Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano to create a Haitian Family Reunification Parole Program.
The state senators join dozens of members of Congress in asking the administration to parole Haitians waiting for family-based visas into the U.S. A similar program was created in 2007 for Cubans approved to join relatives in the U.S.
More than 100,000 Haitians have successfully petitioned to join relatives here, but it can take years for visas to be issued.
The Senate resolution says a parole program will discourage Haitians from risking illegal ways of entering the U.S.
A similar resolution (HM 881) is pending in the Florida House.
