Leaders have two-game leads in Senior Softball

Nacho Mama’s and Joey’s Pizza remain in first place in their respective division’s of the Marco Island Men’s Senior Softball League.

Nacho Mama’s opened up a two-game lead in the Island Division, beating second-place Sand Bar 12-4, along with an Island Restaurant loss, leaving Sand Bar and the Islander Restaurant tied for second.

Joey’s Pizza extended the team’s winning streak to six games, maintaining a two-game lead in the Marco Division over ADKOS.

Nacho Mama’s, 12, Sand Bar, 4

Nacho Mama’s avenged an earlier loss to Sand Bar by taking advantage of errors with timely hitting, coupled by a nine-hit pitching performance by George Schnorr. Jack Martin had three hits and three RBIs and Tom Gazzillo and two hits and two RBIs in the win. Jim George continued to pound the ball for Sand Bar with three hits, two being triples for two RBIs. Jimmy Cuevas drove in the other two runs for Sand Bar on a triple.

Islander Restaurant, 11, Casa Mia, 8

Ralph Sieja drove in four runs on two hits to pace the Islander. Herman Griffith, Bill Thompson and Ron Hobson chipped in with three hits each, with Hobson collecting two RBIs. Jim Green had three hits for Casa Mia.

DaVinci’s, 20, Brewery, 16

DaVinci’s and the Brewery were involved in a slugfest with the two teams combining for 43 hits. Doug Smith led the hit parade for DaVinci’s with five, Dan Moriarty and John Remhoff had four each, Larry Anspach and Jerry Engel three each. Mike Puskar blasted a grand slam home run for four RBIs, with Anspach and Engel having three RBIs. Dave Banghart had four hits for the Brewery, one a two-run home run. Charley Zimmer had three hits and two RBIs. Brewery’s Craig Cunningham crushed a triple as did Anspach and Jim Gilligan for DaVinci’s.

Islander Restaurant, 20, Brewery, 15

Both teams tore the cover off the ball, combining for 51 hits. Steve Clark and Doug Smith pounded out four hits; one of Clark’s was a triple for Islander. Fellow teammates Ed Kingsbury, Fran Diotte, Rich Schiller, and Bill Thompson had three hits each; one of Thompson’s a triple. Clark and Diotte each drove home three runs. The Brewery’s Don Schwartz and Jack Mateja smashed four hits each, with Mateja having a triple and home run, ending up with three RBIs. Jerry Cnudde had three hits.

Sand Bar, 19, Casa Mia, 3

Jim George continued his torrid hitting, going five-for-five, including two doubles and a home run, good for five RBIs. Mike Behr drove in another six runs. Bill Shurina and Bob Levasseur had three hits, with Shurina driving home three runs. Bill DiNeno had three hits for Casa Mia The game was ended at the end of seven innings due to the mercy run rule.

Nacho Mama’s, 14, DaVinci’s, 12

It took 12 innings before DaVinci’s succumbed to Nacho’s. DaVinci’s kept rallying throughout the game, but ran out of gas in the 12th. Tom Pugh drilled four hits for Nacho’s, with Jack Martin collecting four RBIs on three hits; which included a triple and home run. John Cavanagh smacked a triple and a double in the win. Bill Shurina ripped four hits, Dough Smith and John Remhoff banged out three hits, for DaVinci’s with Dan Moriarty stroking a double and a triple.

Sand Bar, 8, Brewery, 6

Sand Bar took advantage of miscues and grouped hits at critical junctures in the game to earn the win. Scott Byers had three hits for Sand Bar, one a triple, giving him two RBIs, with Bill Shurina and Rich Schiller knocking out two hits each. Craig Cunningham, Tom Angelo and John Barrett stroked three hits each for the Brewery. Angelo ripped a triple and drove in three runs

DaVinci’s, 13, Islander Restaurant, 7

Winning pitcher Larry Anspach and Mike Behr drilled three hits each, with Dan Moriarty, Doug Smith, Jerry Engel, John DeRosa, Denny Lello and Mike Cerrutti all having two hits. Smith and Moriarty had three RBIs. Herman Griffith, Bill Thompson, and Steve Clark had two hits each, with Gary LaMotte driving in three runs on a triple for the Islander Restaurant.

Nacho Mama’s, 19, Casa Mia, 13

Nacho’s Rich Krumholz, Tom Pugh, and John Cavanagh banged out four hits, with Tom Gazzillo and Pete Oellrich having three each. Cavanagh drove home four runs; Jack Martin and George Schnorr drove home three. Jack O’Brien rapped four hits, with Ray Kane and Ralph Leiterding chipping in for three hits each for Casa Mia. Murph Knapke had three RBIs on two hits in the loss.


Joey’s Pizza, 9, Crazy Flamingo, 4

Joey’s win was the fifth in a row, matching the team’s longest winning streak for the second time this season. Jim White, Nick Jacullo and Gary Grant drove in two runs, with Jacullo smashing a triple. Dan O’Sullivan drove in two runs for Crazy Flamingo.

Rookies, 6, CJ’s on the Bay, 3

The score was tied at 3-3 ending the last inning when Chuck Cornille drilled a base hit, scoring two runs and the win for Rookies. Dan Callahan knocked in two runs for CJ’s.

ADKOS, 9, Mutual of Omaha Bank, 4

Jan Grossman and Pete Baker chased knocked in two runs each in ADKOS win. Tom Purtell had three hits for the Bank, with Sunny Emerling having two RBIs.

Joey’s Pizza, 16, Rookies, 13

Jim White and Bill Kayhart provided the power for Joey’s. White had five RBIs on a two-run homerun and a triple, while Kayhart, on three hits including a triple plated four runs. Al Cenicola cracked a triple, with Jim Dorey, George Bennett and Gary Grant having two hits each for Joey’s. Ed Kopecky banged out four hits, good for three RBIs for Rookies. Dick Corley stroked three hits, with Bill Voss and Butch Monson smashing triples. Jack Evans, Mike Walsh, and Voss and Monson had two hits each.

Crazy Flamingo, 23, Mutual of Omaha Bank, 6

Flamingo’s pounded out 31 hits in defeating the Bank. Tom Patterson, John Luegering and John Ranieri spanked the ball for four hits each; Joe Furst, Dan O’Sullivan and Joe Kruse lined three hits each. Luegering had four RBIs; Patterson, O’Sullivan, Ranieri, and Chuck Wilson drove in three runs each. Doug Patton slammed a solo home run. Jim Conway had three RBIs for the Bank.

ADKOS, 9, CJ’s on the Bay, 8

ADKOS needed to score three runs in the sixth inning to earn a come-from-behind win over CJ’s. Paul Burnett and Mike Galatis were major contributors in the win. Burnett blasted a three-run home run and Galatis recorded two hits, driving in two runs. Fuzz Fazekas and Jan Grossman whacked triples for ADKOS. Leon Schmitt was a vacuum cleaner at third base for CJ’s, making spectacular fielding plays to keep them in the game. Schmitt also had three hits, while Dom Fiorda and Mel Mandel drove home two runs each for CJ’s.
