— Careless driving contributed to an alcohol-related crash this morning that injured two people when their SUV struck a utility pole near St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church in East Naples, according to Florida Highway Patrol reports.

At 1:12 a.m. Friday, a 2003 Mazda Tribute sport utility vehicle driven by Nicole Marie Shapiro, 31, of Cape Coral was westbound in the right lane of Rattlesnake Hammock Road when it traveled off the road, onto the right shoulder and struck a wooden utility pole east of Valley Stream Drive. The pole snapped, creating a safety hazard from downed power lines on the pole, the FHP reports.

Shapiro and a passenger, Brian J. Parr, 39, of East Naples, both received minor injuries in the single-vehicle crash and were taken to NCH Hospital in downtown Naples. Both occupants were wearing seat belts, the FHP reports.

Shapiro was charged with careless driving, and additional charges are pending in what troopers confirm to be an alcohol-related crash, the FHP reports.

The damage estimate to the SUV is $10,000, the report shows. A damage estimate was not available for the pole or the Florida Power & Light lines.
