Deputies search for rental car linked to home burlaries

Lee deputies are searching for a rental car that may be linked two home burglaries Thursday.

The first burglary was reported about 11 a.m. on the 10300 block of Patrick Lane, Bonita Springs. A 17-year-old girl told deputies a man pried her front door open and entered her home. She believes he was 19 to 20 years old, 5-foot-10 and about 165 pounds, a Lee incident report said.

The suspect ran out of the house after seeing the teen and fled in a four-door Kia.

Approximately 30 minutes later, a man and his wife in Estero were doing property surveying work when they observed two men leaving home on the 9800 block of Colonial Walk. The men got into a Kia Optima that was parked in the driveway with the engine running. When they drove off, reports say, the witness noticed the front door of the home was left open so he called law enforcement and gave them the tag number from the Kia.

The homeowner estimates $40,000 in jewelry, $3,000 in handbags, and a $300 Xbox system were taken from his home.

The investigation is ongoing. "No arrests have been made," according to Deputy C. Vernon Tyus of the Lee County Sheriff's Office. "The Kia is registered to Alamo Rent A Car. The problem is that these individuals typically won't use their information when renting cars for criminal activity."
