Brushes are the first thing I use everyday — my toothbrush — and the last thing I use in the evening — again my toothbrush. Most days I don't even realize how important my brushes are to my well-being. I rely on them but seem to be giving them the brushoff.

While shopping for new brushes, I recalled my mother waiting to get hers from the Fuller Brush man. She could never part with her spiral hair brush and used to replace it every year when he came calling. I found different types of brushes wherever I shopped and even found some antiques and a few that were unique.

Br Uno is where I fell in love with the Chinese Calligraphy Brushes. They are too good looking to use and should be displayed. It was a hard decision deciding among coral, turquoise, bone, bamboo and wood-handled brushes in various lengths (starting at $35).

La Femme Perfumery has the Mason Pearson line of brushes made in England. Your type of hair determines the size and bristles for the Rolls-Royce of brushes (starting at $88). I also liked the natural nail brush ($5) with a detailer on the opposite side. If you use this brush every day your nails will not only be clean, but they will be done in comfort.

This store also has an eyelash curler ($25) that comes with a brush. My favorite brush in the store was the makeup brush made with an antique knife base in silver ($100). The brush is new and waiting to be used, but it would look stunning sitting on a dressing table.

There also was an antique sterling silver hair brush ($275) and a clothes brush ($150) ready to be displayed or used. If you want something beautiful for your purse, there are the Swarovski crystal-decorated small brushes ($180, yellow; $200, rose). Take these out and everyone will forget you need to freshen up your hair.

Macy's is where I found the Shiseido foundation brush ($30) that gets into the hard-to-do spots and the Wonder Link Mascara by Clarins ($24) that give you a luxurious look to your lashes. The Clarins Instant Light Brush-On ($32.50) helps fade away imperfections and diminish lines around your eyes, nose and forehead through an easy application with a brush. This is your beauty emergency go-to brush.

I had to get a brush for Chili, my best friend and faithful companion, my Chesapeake Bay Retriever. I found the Ugroom brush ($9.99) at the Humane Society Naples satellite at Coastland Center mall.

I thought Ike would also like a new brush and found the Jack Black shaving brush at Nordstrom ($85). Lathering up with this will give him a close shave and keep his face soft to the touch.

Now I can brush away to my heart's content in style.

Ike likes it

Ike taste tested the new Kellogg's Raisin Bran Cinnamon Almond that has a heart healthy selection logo.

The verdict: I really enjoy breakfast cereals and at times have even eaten a bowl for lunch. I always thought cereal was good for you but never read the ingredients. Now I am more in tune to what I am eating and read the nutrition contents before buying products. When I saw the "heart healthy" logo I thought this item would be healthy but not very tasty. Oh, boy, was I wrong. This cereal brought back memories of cinnamon toast my mother used to make eons ago on winter mornings. It was so delicious I couldn't believe I was eating something that was actually good for me. This is one breakfast cereal I don't mind mixing with skim milk and don't have to add a banana to make it tastier.
