Naples Sharks U10 keep on winning: Over a three-week span, the Naples Sharks U10 girls team won two local tournaments.
The first was the I-75 Shootout on Jan. 21 and 22 at the Bay Shore Soccer fields in Fort Myers.
The Sharks, coached by Bruce Hershey II and Tom May, were a mixed squad of U9 and U10 players. Teams play 50-minute matches consisting of two 25-minute halves. The Sharks won their first two matches 4-0 and 4-3, but lost their third, 2-1. Regardless, Naples qualified for the championship match and won 3-2.
"All 11 of our girls on the team played an outstanding weekend of soccer," Hershey said.
The three stars of the tournament for the Sharks were Alex Reif, who had the second-most goals scored in the tournament, Mary May, who scored the championship match's game-winning goal, and defender Haile Egan.
Forward Ava Graziano, who had the most goals scored in tournament, was named the tournament MVP.
The second tournament was the Cape Coral Winter Invitational at the Cape Coral soccer fields on Feb. 3 to 5. As in the first tournament, the Sharks qualified for the championship match, winning their initial three games.
In the championship match, the Sharks faced the Cape Coral Cyclones. Knotted 0-0 after two overtimes, the match went to penalty kicks.
Sharks goalie Makenzie Hershey did not allow any goals during the penalty kicks or the entire game. Mercer Bleh scored the game-winning goal during the penalty kicks.
"All 12 girls on the team gave 200 percent on and off the field," coach Hershey said. "I am lucky to coach such a great bunch of dedicated girls that love the game of soccer."
The Sharks' Malaya Melancon had the most goals scored in tournament and defender Ellie Ciissold was superb in her role. Makenzie Hershey earned MVP honors.
