Senior softball standings remain tight

With only six league games left for all teams in the 2012 season, prior to tournament play, both divisions are still up for grabs.

ADKOS knocked off Joey’s Pizza, tying them for first place in the Marco Division. Nacho Mama’s lead dropped to one game in the Island Division, after losing to the Brewery, with Sand Bar taking over sole possession of second place, having won nine out of its last 10 games. In that stretch its only loss was to Nacho Mama’s.

Here are results in order of games played.


Casa Mia, 15, DaVinci’s, 9

Casa Mia ended the team’s eight-game losing streak with Ray Kane playing a significant role, having three hits and five RBIs. Rich Small, Ed Hamill, and Tuttle drove in two runs each. Hamill walloped a triple. DaVinci’s Doug Smith, Larry Anspach and Mike Puskar drilled three hits each. Dan Moriarty, Jim Gilligan, and Puskar drove home two runs each.

Brewery, 19, Nacho Mama’s, 10

The Brewery poured it on to first-place Nacho Mama’s with a barrage of 25 hits. Jack Mateja and Ray Niemeyer hammered four hits each, Craig Cunningham, Tom Angelo and Paul Shelton ripped three hits each. Niemeyer, Angelo and Shelton clocked triples. Angelo ended up with six RBIs, Cunningham three RBIs, with Jerry Cnudde, Dave Coward, Niemeyer and Shelton having two RBIs each. Jim Green peppered three hits for Nacho’s. Power-hitting John Cavanagh chased home five runs on a home run and a double.

Sand Bar, 12, Islander Restaurant, 9

Winning pitcher Jim George continued spanking the ball with four hits. Jimmy Cuevas, Scott Byers and Mike Behr knocked out three hits each. Byers had two triples and George one. Ron Peterson drove home three runs. Bill Shurina and Byers chased home two runs. Steve Clark kept the Islander in the game, cracking a home and a triple, accounting for five runs. Mike Hopkins tagged the ball for three hits.

Nacho Mama’s, 10, Islander Restaurant, 8

The game was tied in the top of the eighth inning, 8-8, when Nacho Mama’s scored the winning run in the bottom of the eighth and an insurance run in the ninth. John Cavanagh ripped four hits and had two RBIs for Nacho’s. Ray Kane and Rich Krumholz had three hits each. Krumholz and Pete Oellich drove in two runs each in the win. Islander’s Ralph Sieja and Steve Clark stroked three hits each and Ed Kingsbury smacked a triple and had three RBIs.

Sand Bar, 12, DaVinci’s, 2

Sand Bar continued playing solid defense in earning the team’s ninth win in its last 10 games. Scott Byers, Ron Peterson, Bob Levasseur and Chet Dal Bianco all drove home two runs. Dan Moriarty lashed out four hits and Doug Smith three for DaVinci’s.

Brewery, 17, Casa Mia, 12

Down 12-1 at the end of three and a half innings, the Brewery came storming back and took the lead and the win with a six-run eighth inning. Brewery’s Dave Banghart and Dave Coward drilled four hits each, with Banghart banging two home runs and had three RBIs. Jack Mateja and Paul Shelton had three hits each, with Jerry Cnudde, Ray Niemeyer, Coward and Shelton driving in two runs each. Casa Mia scored all 12 runs in the first four innings. Four runs came on a Bill DiNeno grand slam home run. Bill Griffin had a four-hit game and Rich Small three hits. John Remhoff, Small and Larry Tuttle had two RBIs each for Casa Mia.


ADKOS, 11, Rookies, 8

Scoring three runs in the top of the seventh, ADKOS broke an 8-8 tie for the win. Mike Galatis slammed four hits, with Larry Laird, Paul Burnett and Don Rooksberry having three hits each for ADKOS. Rooksberry smacked a three-run home run and Barry Bates drove in another two runs for ADKOS. Aided by 11 walks Rookies were able to stay in the game. Mike Walsh laced three hits, the only Rookie player with multiple hits. Ed Kopecky had three RBIs in the loss.

Crazy Flamingo, 8, CJ’s on the Bay, 4

Doug Patton hammered a two-run home run in the sixth inning, breaking open the game for Crazy Flamingo. Chuck Wilson drove in three runs and Fred Kramer two runs. Ray Zielinski and Lee Dilk rapped out three hits each for CJ’s.

Mutual of Omaha Bank, 9, Joey’s Pizza, 7

The Bank held off a last-inning rally by Joey’s to preserve the win. Joey’s rallied from an 8-1 deficit, scoring six runs in the seventh. Roger Fleming blasted a two-run home run for the Bank which was the difference in the game. John Hedges had a triple for the Bank. The Bionic 82-year-young John Ranieri, playing his third game of the day, made a number of outstanding defensive plays. Gary Grant drove in two runs for Joey’s who was limited to six hits by Bank pitcher Jerry Garrett.

CJ’s on the Bay, 11, Mutual of Omaha Bank, 9

CJ’s scored seven runs in the bottom of the seventh for a thrilling come-from-behind win. Lee Dilk delivered the fatal blow, a grand slam home run. Warren Uhl contributed three RBIs on a home run and a double, while Dan Stanard and winning pitcher Roger Wise had two hits each. Dick DeAnna, Buff Morris, and Bob Beaver laced two hits each for the Bank, with John Dugan driving home two runs on a double.

ADKOS, 13, Joey’s Pizza, 3

Paul Burnett’s hitting earned ADKOS a tie for first place in the Marco Division. Burnett peppered three hits, including a home run and two RBs. Al Bozzo, Paul Vorwick, Barry Bates, Mark Matthews, and winning pitcher Dan Callahan had two hits each. This was Joey’s second loss in two days, with only Tom Whitlock managing to have two hits. Chuck Reich drove in two runs on a triple

Rookies, 17, Crazy Flamingo, 16

Rookies had a five-run lead going in the last inning, only to see Flamingo tie the game. Winning pitcher Butch Monson’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning won it for Rookies. Jack Evans drilled four hits, with Dick Corley, Ed Kopecky and Bill Voss having three each. Corley and Kopecky blasted home runs for Rookies. Evans, Corley and Kopecky ended up with three RBIs each. Flamingo’s Doug Patton, Rick Larkin, Fred Kramer and Fred Toxopeus racked up three hits each. John Ranieri, John Luegering and Larkin all drove home three runs, with Luegering smacking a home run and Kramer a triple in the loss.

ADKOS, 12, Crazy Flamingo, 4

Larry Laird punched out three hits with Al Bozzo, Barry Bates, Paul Burnett, and Jan Grossman, driving home two runs each for first-place ADKOS. Bates had a triple. John Ranieri recorded two RBIs, and John Luegering hoisted a solo home run for Crazy Flamingo.

Rookies, 10, Mutual of Omaha Bank, 7

Rookies’ Butch Monson had four RBIs and Frank Dooley two RBIs, both having two hits. Sonny Emerling drove in three runs and John Dugan two runs on two hits apiece for Mutual of Omaha Bank.

Joey’s Pizza, 17, CJ’s on the Bay, 1

The mercy rule was invoked as Joey’s pounded out 20 hits, scoring six runs in the sixth inning to end the game. Bill Kayhart and Tom Whitlock stroked three hits each. Jim Dorey drove in three runs on two doubles and Nick Jacullo drove in two runs. Winning pitcher Chuck Reich scattered nine hits with no CJ’s player having more than one hit. Reich cracked a triple for Joey’s.
