As in previous years, the opportunities and adventures that lie before us in 2012 will be partly controlled by us, as individuals, as a community at large, and partly by those that see us only as "the voting public" or "shareholders."
Fortunately, the quality of service and the excellence in health care provided by doctors, nurses and supporting staff are something that can only be influenced by local individuals who focus on caring for others.
We will be exposed to an election year of promises and the pledge to balance our nation's budget without any special-interest group being asked to tighten its belt. We will hear from our federal government about how the cost of health care is rising and that "quality care" is required while at the same time discussing reimbursement reductions to physicians and hospitals.
Lucid focus on patient-centered care and technological innovations must always be at the forefront of discussion regarding our national and local health-care delivery systems.
Physicians Regional Healthcare System (PRHS) is looking forward to a successful 2012. Our success is not and will not only be measured by the increase in the number of patients who choose PRHS for their health care, but also by having Southwest Florida's highest scores in quality measures, based on the leading accreditation agency — the Joint Commission (www.jointcommission.org) — and other satisfaction score criteria such as HCAHPS — Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems, which is a standardized data collection system for measuring patients' perceptions of their hospital experience.
Our vision and follow-through has allowed us to excel in service and innovation and is evident by our ability to partner with local physicians and to recruit world-class health-care providers to our system. Building a great team has allowed us to offer services that are second to none and many that are not offered by other health-care providers in the region.
One new collaboration is with Naples Radiology Associates. This skilled group of radiologists has provided uncompromising care to Southwest Florida for 30 years. Forging solid relationships such as this one and our ability to procure state-of-the-art surgical and diagnostic equipment will assist our highly skilled physicians and staff to provide our community the best care possible.
Physicians Regional's growth in health-care technology, both previously and in the future, is evident by the addition of our two da Vinci robots that assist with minimally invasive surgeries for faster recovery; the area's only MAKOplasty robots that help deliver a more precise surgery for hips and knees; and our addition of the Siemens 3T MRI (coming in April). This MRI will be the most powerful magnet in Southwest Florida and is designed to help physicians diagnose medical issues faster and with greater clarity.
The future of health care has one certainty — the fact that each one of us, at some point in time, will need to seek out high-quality care, whether it is for you, a family member or a friend. My sole purpose as the CEO of Physicians Regional Healthcare System is to coordinate a team of highly skilled, compassionate caregivers and support staff that will provide positively great health care.
You deserve the best in local health care and I am committed to make sure you receive just that. Our Physicians Regional Medical Group — with 50-plus physicians, two state-of-the-art hospital campuses (on Pine Ridge Road and Collier Boulevard) and our many physician practices in both Collier and Lee counties — are here to make sure our community is well taken care of.
I hope you have a happy and healthy new year. God bless.
