Every politician runs for office vowing to eliminate waste and cut spending.
Every elected politician spends. Democrat or Republican, left or right, they all spend — they just want to spend on different things. The president and other politicians rail against the rich for using tax loopholes they voted into the tax code. Others complain about the 47 percent of the electorate who pay no taxes at all — also allowed by the tax code and voted into law by Congress and signed by some president or other.
In the meantime the ship of state sails merrily along toward the abyss. When the end comes, and it will, who will be to blame? Anyone? Does it matter? Apparently not, because we continue to elect and re-elect the stars of this tragedy.
As the comic strip Pogo used to inveigh: 'We have met the enemy and he is us."
