Letter: Straying, stretching

The tea party/religious right claim to be "strict constructionists of the Constitution."

Nothing could be further from the truth.

The First Amendment guarantees freedom of speech, press, association and freedom of religion. They call President Barack Obama every name in the book, yet complain daily that all news media (except Fox) are biased against them. They demonstrate at all Planned Parenthood clinics, seeking to take women's rights away, yet are against other demonstrators, such as Occupy Wall Street.

As for freedom of press, they write letters daily criticizing Obama and liberals, then accuse the Naples Daily News of being biased. A great example is Jim Brock's letter of Nov. 25 accusing the newspaper of "leaning left" for publishing articles by Ann McFeatters, totally ignoring the fact that this newspaper publishes articles weekly by four extreme "right-leaning" writers like Jay Ambrose, Cal Thomas,Thomas Sowell and Dan Thomasson.

They also want to deny the most fundamental rights to our gay and lesbian citizens, many whom fought and died for our country.

Neither do they take seriously the freedom of religion clause as they claim this is a Christian nation, but have little or no tolerance for other beliefs.

They believe all non-Christians and even Christians that do not believe Jesus is their savior will go to a very hot place (not Florida) so only their religion is right, while over two-thirds of the world believes otherwise.

This all appears to be a mockery of the First Amendment.
