Letter: Two-pronged plan

Several times a week letters appear in the Naples Daily News indignantly complaining that other people fail to pay enough income taxes. Of course, it is well known that top 10 percent earners already pay 70 percent of federal income taxes.

That sure seems adequate, but hey, that's just me. Nearly half pay nothing at all.

President Barack Obama demands that the Bush tax cuts be scrapped, replaced by the higher taxes of the Clinton era, all in the name of "fair share." Excellent.

There is a solution that should please everyone. Tax time is here again. Surely, these compassionate, caring, self-righteous, concerned liberals would want to pay their fair share. Tens of millions of them voted, and will vote again, for Obama.

Here's there chance to put their money where their mouth is.

The IRS should print the current tax forms with two payment schedules, one using the Bush rates and the other the Clinton rates. Surely all liberals will pay the higher Clinton rates. How could they possible live with themselves otherwise? How could they not pay their fair share?

Those paying the Clinton rates would get a large button and a bumper sticker from the IRS proudly proclaiming "FAIR SHARE TAXPAYER."

This would be win-win. Who could possibly object? Given the millions of Obama voters out there, the government would get billions in additional revenue. Those paying the Clinton rates would get recognition for their virtue. Liberals who do not would be shamed into keeping their mouths shut. What could be better?
