Editorial: Balloons could be a good, fun deal in Immokalee

Here's a neat idea.

The Immokalee Seminole Casino proposes bringing back a special event not seen in Collier County since the 1980s — hot air balloon racing.

The weekend event would come in the middle of April at Immokalee Regional Airport.

Winds tend to be calm and there are no tall buildings for balloons to bump into.

It sounds like fun for spectators as well as participants who tend to come from far and wide for these events. That would mean successful balloon events could be good for business too. Those participants will have to stay and eat somewhere, right?

We have long believed that our area can use a special trademark event beyond the annual Swamp Buggy Races.

That is healthy for our identity and sense of community, and good for making a buck or two.

We hope the balloon event is just the ticket.

It could be one of the few appealing projects that are full of hot air by design.

And we hope the good ideas keep on coming from the Immokalee casino and anyone else pushing the envelope for fun and games.
