NAPLES — After five games and nearly 12 hours of basketball, the best was saved for last, literally, Saturday at the second annual Lee/Collier Basketball Bash at Lely High.
Trojans senior forward Nesly Olbrice nailed a 3-point shot at the buzzer to lift Lely, 56-54, over Fort Myers to end the day’s fifth and final game between Lee and Collier County schools.
Nick Talko (26 points)scored on a layup with 31 seconds remaining in the game to bring the Trojans within 54-53. The Green Wave’s Rodney Caster missed the front end of a one-and-one and Lely grabbed the rebound and called a timeout. The Trojans inbounded the ball at halfcourt with 20 seconds to go.
Trojans coach Ryan Bowen designed a play for Talko to take the last shot. With the seconds ticking away, Talko kicked the ball out to Olbrice on the left sideline.
Olbrice tried to make a move, looked at the clock, pulled up and let the ball fly. Swish. Ballgame.
“I saw I had it all the time,” said Olbrice, who had 13 points in the victory. It was his second buzzer beater of the year. Earlier in the season, Obrice stunned Gulf Coast with no time remaining.
“I don’t even let Olbrice take that shot in practice,” said Bowen, whose team improved to 8-8. “That (win) was a big one right there. Our kids needed a big win to believe in what we’re trying to do.”
Despite the Lely win, the Lee County teams ended the day with a 3-2 win advantage. Cape Coral defeated Community School to start off the event. Riverdale then routed Golden Gate in the second game. Mariner got the best of Gulf Coast 55-53 to give Lee a 3-0 advantage.
Barron Collier got Collier County on the board when the Cougars eventually ran away with a 58-40 victory over a game South Fort Myers.
Barron (11-3) led by two points after the first quarter, then Deion Clark took over. The 6-foot-4 senior, who has committed to Old Dominion, scored 10 points in the second quarter as Barron went on a 12-0 run going into intermission.
The Wolfpack closed within 33-29 in the third before Barron went on another 12-0 run at the end of the period to put the game away.
Clark led all scorers with 25 points. Jack Kelly led the 2-10 Wolfpack with 10 points.
