Letter: Shocked

My Bardsley family was always Republican, which meant fiscally responsible. They would have been shocked by the political silliness of family values and arguing about who is a true conservative.

Church affiliation and religion were not part of politics to them. Didn't our ancestors cross the ocean to escape this kind of thing?

Ultra conservatives concern me greatly, for they seem to want their religious agenda to become the law of the land. As I type this, state laws are being considered that do just that. I can well imagine some of the Republican hopefuls' plans. Abortion out!

And in Utah, a largely Mormon state, our beloved happy hour could be gone. Poof!

I could cite many other examples.

Read about Israel and what the ultra Orthodox Jews are trying to do. I was there and saw roads blocked by them — no driving allowed. We all know what has happened in many Muslim countries: ultra Sharia laws for everyone. What about Ireland in the past? No divorce — church law.

Often life progresses in tiny steps, one innocuous law at a time, and many are unaware until too late Take, for instance, Prohibition. Who would have dreamed of such a thing. Our beloved and often cited Constitution was even amended with dire unexpected consequences.

So think about the future of our country and what it would be like with certain people in power. Think about your own personal freedom.

Think, worry and be wary.
