Letter: What about the USA?

Re: Story subheadlined "Lely High graduate named one of 12 Obama Scholars in the Nation."

Kudos to Carlos Gustavo for his hard work and determination in this awesome achievement. He, his family and support group of teachers and friends should also be proud of the motivation that has encouraged him through the years. Being accepted at Georgia Tech is no small accomplishment. (I have a grandson at Georgia Tech, so I know the requirements.)

However, I am deeply disturbed by his goals after his education: "He aspires to work on projects that will help Latin American countries have the opportunities and lifestyles enjoyed in the United States."

I'm saddened that someone who has been mentored and encouraged and given a wonderful opportunity which this country has afforded him will not be contributing to this great country.

This country needs people like Carlos to be innovative and creative and to help us at a time when we are experiencing great changes in our society — and brain drains from other cultures.

It is commendable that he wants to help others less fortunate, but there is a great demand in the good old USA.

Good luck, Carlos.
