ORMOND BEACH — Authorities say a 12-year-old boy died in a crash involving his 18-year-old sister, who was picking him up from a Central Florida middle school.

It was unclear Thursday whether Cameron Brenneman was a pedestrian or thrown from the vehicle before it hit him about 2:50 p.m. Wednesdsay.

The Daytona Beach News-Journal reports the pickup driven by Mckensie Malecki struck another vehicle near Ormond Beach Middle School. The truck then then crashed into a concrete utility pole.

The seventh grader was taken to a hospital, where he died from his injuries.

The newspaper reports 14 Volusia County students have been struck by vehicles while walking or biking to or from school since August.

School officials say grief counselors will be at the school on Thursday to help grieving students.
