UF student injured when chemistry lab explodes

GAINESVILLE — A student received minor injuries during a chemistry lab explosion inside the University of Florida's Sisler Hall.

The Orlando Sentinel reports the building will be closed for at least a day following the Wednesday afternoon explosion.

University police say the student was taken to Shands Hospital for evaluation. The building was evacuated after the 5:45 p.m. explosion.

The newspaper reports a hazardous-materials unit from Gainesville Fire Rescue is investigating to find out what kind of chemicals were involved. Officials say the chemicals were toxic.

No further details were immediately available.
