Marco Senior Softball shows parity

The 2012 season has shown parity in the Island and Marco Divisions of the Marco Men’s Senior Softball League.

In the Island Division, Nacho Mama’s is undefeated with a 4-0 record and has a two-game lead over Sand Bar, The Brewery and Islander Restaurant. The Marco Division has Joey’s Pizza, Crazy Flamingo’s and ADKOS tied with 2-1 records for first place and the other three teams only one game back at 1-2.

Here are the most recent results.


Brewery, 12, Sand Bar, 10

Trailing 7-6, The Brewery scored six runs in the eighth inning to take over the lead, and then had to hold off a ninth-inning rally by Sand Bar for the win. Don Schwartz had his second consecutive three-hit game with two RBIs for The Brewery. Teammates Dave Coward and Paul Shelton also had three hits each, with Ray Niemeyer and John Barrett each collecting two RBIs. Sand Bar’s Jimmy Cuevas had a huge three-run homer and four RBIs on three hits. Joe Cervelli hammered a two-run homer, giving him three RBIs in the game.

Islander Restaurant, 23, DaVinci’s, 13

Islander’s torrid bats accounted for 24 hits in trouncing DaVinci’s. Steve Clark and Herm Griffith laced four hits apiece, with Mike Hopkins, Ed Kingsbury and Ron Hobson having three each. Clark had four RBIs, Kingsbury three, as did Fran Diotte on a three-run home run. DaVinci’s Denny Lello and John DeRosa had a four-hit game, good for two RBIs. Paul Moriarty recorded four RBIs on three hits, including a home run. Mike Cerrutti and Ray Niemeyer had three hits as well, with Cerrutti driving in three runs.

Nacho Mama’s, 10, Casa Mia’s, 6

Rich Krumholz continued ripping the cover off the ball with three hits, including a grand slam home run for Nacho’s. Pete Oellich chipped in with three hits, good for two RBIs, while John Cavanagh cracked a two-run homer. Ed Hamill had three hits and Bill DiNeno two RBIs for Casa Mia.

Nacho Mama’s, 24, Islander

Restaurant, 8

Nacho’s pounded out 23 hits and drew eight walks in paddling the Islanders. Rich Krumholz has a perfect hitting record with 12 hits in the first three games for Nacho’s. Jack Martin banged out three hits and had three RBIs. Tom Pugh and Tom Gazzillo drive in four runs apiece to contribute to the scoring attack. Krumholz and Gazzillo each had a triple. Bill Thompson had three RBIs and a home run for the Islander.

Sand Bar, 11, DaVinci’s, 3

Sand Bar bats came alive, hammering out 21 hits for its first win of the season. Chet Dal Bianco and Pete Oellich had three hits each. Larry Anspach and Jerry Engel had three hits each for DaVinci’s. Tom Gazzillo made a number of key defensive plays for Sand Bar. Steve Hummel cracked a triple for DaVinci’s.

Casa Mia’s, 14, The Brewery, 10

Jack O’Brien drilled four hits, good for five RBIs and Jeff Hultgren added four RBIs in Casa Mia’s first win. Ray Kane had three hits in rounding out the hitting for Casa Mia’s. Kane and Hultgren each smacked triples. Craig Cunningham, Tom Angelo, Paul Shelton and Jerry Cnudde ripped three hits apiece for The Brewery, with Shelton accounting for four RBIs.

DaVinci’s, 6, Casa Mia’s, 3

DaVInci’s first win of the season was due to the pitching of Dan Moriarty who helped his cause with two doubles and an RBI. Doug Smith banged out four hits, including a double, with Larry Anspach driving in two runs for DaVinci’s. Losing pitcher Bill Griffin had two RBIs for Casa Mia.

Nacho Mama’s, 25, The Brewery, 17

Big John Cavanagh smacked a grand slam home run, recording six RBIs on four hits for Nacho’s. Jim Williams and Rich Krumholz had five hits, Tom Pugh four and Jack Martin three as Nacho’s slammed out 29 hits. Krumholz has 17 hits in 20 at bats for a sizzling .850 batting average. Brewery’s Charlie Zimmer and Paul Shelton had four hits; Ray Niemeyer, Tom Angelo and Jerry Cnudde had three hits. Shelton, Angelo, Cnudde and Craig Cunningham had three RBIs each in the loss.

Sand Bar, 7, Islander Restaurant, 3

Pitcher Jim George limited the power-hitting Islanders to only one extra base hit. Ed Kingsbury had three hits as George allowed only 10 hits in the game. Pete Oellich, Tom McCullough, and Jimmy Cuevas laced three hits each for Sand Bar, with Bill Shurina driving in three runs.


Mutual of Omaha Bank, 14,

CJ’s on the Bay, 0

Third basemen John Dugan drove in five runs on three hits for the Bank. Dugan, Roger Fleming, and Dick DeAnna also had triples, with Fleming, DeAnna and Sonny Emerling having two RBIs each. Winning pitcher Jerry Garrett limited CJ’s to six hits in recording the shutout. Dom Fiorda and Dan Callahan each had two hits for CJ’s.

Joey’s Pizza, 11, ADKOS, 4

The game was over after the first inning when Joey’s pushed six runs across the plate. Jim Dorey had a big day at the plate, driving in four runs on three hits, including a home run. Jim White drove in three runs, including a home run. Fuzz Fazekas was the only ADKOS player with two hits, as winning pitcher Chris Reich kept ADKOS batters off stride for most of the game.

Crazy Flamingo, 14, Rookies, 4

The bionic man, 82-year-old John Ranieri, was the catalyst in Flamingo’s win, stroking three hits and collecting three RBIs. Power-hitting Doug Patton was also very instrumental, clocking two doubles for four RBIs. Winning pitcher Joe Furst limited Rookies to eight hits.

ADKOS, 10, Rookies, 7

Paul Vorwick slammed a solo home run and Don Rooksbury cracked a two-run home run for ADKOS, with Jim Adams driving in three runs for the win. Winning pitcher Fuzz Fazekas limited Rookies to six hits and six walks.

CJ’s on the Bay, 9, Crazy Flamingo, 8

CJ’s overcame an 8-3 deficit, scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh for its first win. Dom Fiorda had a big day at the plate, rapping out four hits, good for two RBIs for CJ’s. Dan Standard had three hits, with Warren Uhl and Tony Brock driving in two runs each for CJ’s. John Ranieri, Chuck Wilson and Dan O’Sullivan ripped three hits each for Flamingo.

Joey’s Pizza, 20,

Mutual of Omaha Bank, 11

Bill Kayhart banged out four hits, good for four RBIs, while Chuck Reich and George Bennett had three hits each in Joey’s win. One of Reich’s hits was a solo home run and Jim Conway smacked a triple. The Bank’s Ed Brack, John Dugan, and Jack Stevenson laced three hits each.


Nacho Mama’s, 4-0, Sand Bar, The Brewery, Islander Restaurant, 2-2, Casa Mia and DaVinci’s, 1-3.


Joey’s Pizza, Crazy Flamingo and ADKOS, 2-1, Mutual of Omaha Bank, Rookies and CJ’s on the Bay, 1-2.
