The Lely wrestling team did well enough its first-day of competition that it got to compete on Saturday in Pool A in the Golden Gate Titan Duals.
The Trojans finished fourth, with a 2-3 Pool A mark, 4-3 overall.
Claudel Alix led Lely with a 6-1 mark, followed by Diego Cruz, Alfrande Pierre and Matt Marinez at 4-2.
To Lely coach Mark Modica the Pool A record wasn’t important.
“We wrestled well to make it to Pool A and we competed with the best,” Modica said as his team was finishing competition. “We wrestled close with Key West and they beat Palmetto Ridge,” the tourney favorite.
Palmetto Ridge lost 36-30 to Key West, placing second. It was the Bears first loss against 28 dual wins.
Lely also wrestled well against American Heritage, losing 33-3,0 as Heritage finished third.
Lely’s Alix has had a marvelous two weeks, going 5-0 and undefeated in the Collier County Athletic Conference meet the weekend before.
If it weren’t for Modica, Alix wouldn’t be wrestling.
“The coach has been on my case, recruiting me since football,” Alix said.
He wrestled as a freshmen, but didn’t wrestle last year.
“I’m happy I came out,” he said.
Alix now has two sports where college scouts may be interested, but first Alix is concentrating on his academic grades.
“I dug a hole for me on grades and I am digging my way out,” Alix said. “I will work hard and let the Lord determine my way.”
Lely travels to a tournament at Mariner High School in Cape Coral this weekend.
