Editorial: Traffic light on U.S. 41

There has been another serious traffic accident on U.S. 41 East.

Specifically, the accident occurred where Collier County Commissioner Donna Fiala and others have been pushing for a traffic light for years.

The latest wreck claimed the life a 54-year-old woman who was trying to cross the busy highway in broad daylight, just before noon. Two months before that, a teenager riding a bike was hit by traffic and suffered a traumatic brain injury.

Common sense and personal safety always should come first, but fundamental safety signals where a pattern of danger exists is fundamental as well.

We often wonder how many tragedies have to happen before action is taken. Now we have one more on U.S. 41 East.

The Florida Department of Transportation says the matter is under review — and now adds that the review may be expedited.

We'll see.
